Centuries ago, Ravenna Mal was One of the Few, one among many sworn to protect the world from the night’s creatures. Her upbringing was unforgiving; as a warrior, she could form no close relationships, and she could especially never fall in love.
A vampire called Nicolai challenged everything she knew, introducing her to worldly sins, worshiping her flesh with his hands and mouth, and worming into her heart before she realized how painful love could be…especially when ripped away.
In the present, Raven Rayne has a problem. A new vampire called Nicholas in town; one who speaks to her without saying a word, one who stirs long-dormant feelings she can’t dismiss as dreams.
A chance spell reunites Raven with the past she never knew, and memories of Nicholas she couldn’t have dreamed. And though he doesn’t remember her, she knows she must do everything she can to remind him.
Excerpt
He’d had his eyes on her all night. She knew. She felt him watching.
Club Intensity was, well, as intense as ever, but she hadn’t scoped out anything dangerous to slay. Aside from Mr. Stares-A-Lot, a few harmless demons chattered in the corner about an upcoming marriage, and the only slightly frightening demon in the joint had passed out at the bar. Raven knew she shouldn’t be here. Dexter would kill her if he found out, especially since she’d forgotten her cell phone and hadn’t told him where she planned to go on the evening’s watch, but the streets lay dead and the club buzzed with life. Just once… just once, she wanted to look and feel and take in what everyone else experienced every day.
Just once she wanted not to be One of the Few.
Which was all fine and dandy, except a vampire had spent the night eyeballing her, and that was never a good sign. Vampires were unpredictable. Some lived by a code of protecting humans, while others loathed the human race and wanted nothing but the world to return to the way they thought things had once stood. Judging by the malice in Fangy’s eyes, he fell into the latter category. It was just as well, Raven supposed. She hadn’t had a good fight in ages.
It looked like she didn’t have to wait any longer. Blood Breath had started her way, worming a path through the club’s rowdier patrons, eyes never wavering.
Something about those eyes…
“You know what I am,” he said by means of introduction.
Raven licked her lips and nodded, trying and failing to shake off the feeling that she’d seen him before. She hadn’t. She’d certainly remember a vampire like him. Most anti-human vampires were fangs out, ask questions later. This one didn’t come bearing fangs. His short brown hair fit his face nicely, accentuating high cheekbones and those killer blue eyes which seemed to hypnotize. His well-muscled body stood clad in a pair of dark jeans and a black t-shirt, and though he didn’t tower over her, he did top her off by a few inches. It was… nice, in a weird way. Raven wasn’t exactly known for her height. She figured she appeared well proportioned with the hour-glass shape, and everything looked like it belonged where it belonged. She wore her chestnut hair at her shoulders and she definitely wasn’t tall, making most men feel like skyscrapers in comparison.
The vampire was different. He didn’t overwhelm her with his size. He complemented her.
A very dangerous thing for a vampire to do.
He was so…pretty.
“I know what you are,” Raven said, pressing her thighs together. All at once, she was aware of a thousand things. Her skin was hot and flushed, and strange tinglies were spreading through her veins and making her panties moisten. Lust seemed a foreign sensation, one she’d felt in spurts during her teens but she’d never been given the opportunity to explore it as it served as a danger and could cost One of the Few his or her life.
Right now, she just wanted the vampire to touch her.
Another very dangerous thing for a vampire to do.
“Then you should know my name,” he said, head dipping. His voice fanned her ear, igniting a flame she hadn’t known there was to ignite. Her nipples tightened inexplicably, and she felt damp between her legs. Hot and… wet.
Oh God, so dangerous.
He whispered his name. Nicholas. It rolled off his lips and wrapped around her like a blanket, and the shiver she’d felt before exploded into a world of sensation.
It didn’t strike her as a remarkable name, rather it was one that she’d heard many times before. However, that did little to explain why she felt so…
Complete.
And then, like proverbial mist, he was gone.

Book Review: 'Dead, Undead, or Somewhere in Between.'

With the explosion in popularity among many paranormal romances and urban fantasies, one would expect a variety in motifs, execution and lore in the stories themselves. While many authors have a knack for bending rules and taking a common theme and making it their own, creating a tangible yet fantastical world becomes more difficult. The goal is to ensnare the reader with an angle that hasn’t been explored, or to revisit one that needs revisiting with a unique twist. You want your work to be original while still acknowledging the typical hooks within the genre, and you want to make sure that, were a reader to stumble into your world, they would know it’s yours and no one else’s.
J.A Saare’s Dead, Undead, Or Somewhere In Between is a rare treat of a novel. In it, readers are introduced to characters real enough to be your next door neighbor and a storyline engaging enough to keep you up well past your bedtime just so you can find out what happens next. The novel is shown through the eyes of its sassy, foul-mouthed protagonist, Rhiannon Murphy. Rhiannon is a bartender by trade, though she has the unenviable ability to see those who have departed from this mortal coil…both once and twice over. This makes her an incredibly powerful necromancer, as well as the unwitting target of local beasties who want to drag her into their world.
Rhiannon spends her nights tending bar, dealing with loud-mouthed regulars and bickering strippers. Her routine is hijacked by a vampire called Disco, who promptly turns Rhiannon’s world on its head. She is introduced to others who possess her abilities—though not quite to her extent—and implored for help in uncovering who is behind a string of nasty vamp-killings. As a necromancer who can see the twice-dead, Rhiannon’s abilities make her an invaluable asset for the good guys and a coveted trophy for the bad.
This story quite literally has everything, but I think the aspect I was most taken with was the Ms. Saare’s ability to weave and write such strong, believable characters. Through the roster of personalities to which readers are introduced, every one of them maintains originality and their own voice. Furthermore, Ms. Saare has an appreciation for wit, and certainly knows how to creatively but tastefully interweave sass and story, especially during parts that demand comic relief. I loved the slow get-to-know-you between Rhiannon and Disco and the build-up in their relationship, but I was also impressed with how other ‘side’ characters were never shoved from “screen-time” for the sake of the romance.
I was also incredibly impressed with the climax. There was no quick-fix or rapid explanation, rather a very serious and “hold your breath” conclusion to the main storyline. The antagonists were well written and appropriately creepy, and the last ten pages? Well…let’s just say I’ll be waiting with my credit card when the next installment is released.
If you’re looking for a good, engaging, well-written story with believable characters, then Dead, Undead, Or Somewhere In Between is definitely the book for you. It’s witty and original, and easily one of my favorite reads in a long while.

*taps mic* Testing, testing, 1,2,3. Is this thing on?
Well, the past few days have been really exciting. I've received some really amazing reviews for both Possession and Firsts, and I've been notified that my upcoming Siren release, Ripples Through Time, is going to be debuted about a month earlier than I thought. I have to send back the final revisions by next Friday, but the release date has been bumped to March 4. Whee!
So allow for some shameless self-promotion... it doesn't count if others have promoted and I'm just passing on the word, right?
Firsts reviewed at The Raving Readers
Possession reviewed at Coffee Time Romance, You Gotta Read Reviews, and the Bookaholics Romance Book Club.
I've also been reading an awesome novel: Dead, Undead, or Somewhere in Between by J.A. Saare. It's really amazing - strong characterization, a fantastic and compelling plot, and sharp, edgy writing. I really can't recommend it enough. Look for an extended review once I finish it.
I've also updated my author site with a new layout.
More news to come!
